The World Premiere of the Feature Film NATE AND THE COLONEL was held at Laemmle Monica Theater on Thursday night in Santa Monica. This special independent film is about what might have been in the history of the American Post-Civil was era. The story itself talks about a time in our history that most Americans are unaware of or have forgotten.

The mythical story is about a confederate solider who travels West with his long time friends, Nate, a recently freed slave. The lobby of the movie theater told that story too. Some actors in the film showed up in their solider uniforms, and Native Americans were dressed in there traditional regalia. The night was kicked off by a dance performed from the Native American Bear Paw Dance Troupe, which does Northern Traditional dances that depict a battle or hunting party that they’ve done. The crowd loved the energy they brought to the room before entering the theater.

NATE AND THE COLONEL was written, directed, and starred Paul Winters. He wrote this story based

on his ancestors. Being from the South himself he felt he owed it to his forefathers to tell a story, "I feel I was honoring them in a way, because I am both ashamed and proud to be from the South." Everyone involved with the movie has a great deal of pride in telling a story that educates as well as entertains. Actor Rico Ross plays the role of a slave after the civil war. He said he found "it was a very challenging role and it was exciting to make it real."

The movie follows the two friends as their adventures lead them into a community of Chippewa people where they carve out a new world of peace, friendship and love. It is nominated for the Best Picture Award by the 2003 American Indian LA Film and TV Awards Asscociation.
