Jane Monheit
- By Sarah Happel, SoCal Magazine

With the voice of an angel, Jane Monheit sang classics followed by Christmas songs at the Center for the Arts at Pepperdine University on December 6th.  Accompanied by her longtime band, Monheit made stunningly beautiful singing look effortless with her simplicity and expert vocal control.

Jane Monheit, a tremendously talented jazz singer, performs around the world at concert halls and jazz venues.  To wide acclaim, she has released seven albums and appeared in collaboration with artists like Michael Buble. Two of her recordings have received prestigious Grammy nominations and her appearances on national television shows are commonplace.  Her coolly supporting band, Michael Kanan on piano, Neal Miner on bass, and Rick Montalbano on drums, includes her husband – Montalbano.

The concert began with favorites that made the audience cheer from the first note, perhaps the most popular being Somewhere Over The Rainbow.  During the second act, Monheit amused audiences with lesser-known Christmas tunes that she smartly picked to keep the audience feeling as though each tune was fresh and unique.

Throughout the concert, Monheit shared stories about her life with a new baby, her loving husband, and the trials of making an album very late in her pregnancy.  At times, Monheit takes your breath away as you sink into the notes she holds and so emotionally controls.  As she moves through her songs, the audience only becomes more attached with her striking beauty, elegance, and artistic brilliance.
