Amber Stevens: Living the "Greek" Life
June 6, 2008 - Molly Sullivan

Every college graduate probably has a million stories from their college years, and these tales are brought to TV every week with Amber Stevens and the cast of ABC Family’s “Greek.”

“There’s been a lot of teen dramas, but for some reason nothing that really took place in college,” Stevens explained about how “Greek” found an audience and became the network’s best-rated show.

Stevens, whose parents are actor/radio announcer Shadoe Stevens and model Beverly Cunningham, plays Ashleigh Howard, the loyal, fun-loving best friend of main character Casey Cartwright (Spencer Grammer). “I love that Ashleigh's very real. A lot of people can relate to someone like her,” Stevens said. Although, she quickly noted, she doesn’t have that boy-crazy, dancing-on-the-tables side of Ashleigh in her.

The character of Ashleigh has grown throughout every episode of “Greek” thanks to Stevens. When she got the pilot episode, “there wasn’t a lot to learn about her, but I did like that she was the lead story’s best friend who’s always there to give her advice and support.” Her character’s advice and support have also grown to help out other characters on the hit show, like Calvin Owens (played by Paul James) as he adjusts to being openly gay.

Not only does Stevens get to enjoy the bubbly, energetic side of Ashleigh, but she’s also getting to explore the more vulnerable part of her character as well. Ashleigh is a girl who has fallen for all the wrong guys over and over it seems, but still manages to keep a positive outlook. “She lets guys kind of walk on her a little and boss her around,” Stevens said, making note that this is yet another example of how she and her onscreen persona differ. But this is also where female viewers can sympathize with Ashleigh, really getting to connect with the character in a different way. “A lot of girls can and have been in relationships for years where they’re kind of unhappy and bossed around, so they can identify with that,” Stevens said.

One of the best parts about playing Ashleigh has to be the clothes. For anyone who isn’t familiar with the show, Ashleigh’s outfits are fun, spunky and a little crazy thanks to “Greek’s” costume designer, Mandi Line.

“Ashleigh is like a mini Mandi,” Stevens laughed. “She wears everything that Mandi would wear in real life.”

Stevens said she always looks forward to her costume fittings, as she never knows what to expect other than that her wardrobe will be something totally wild and definitely something that will make a person stand out in a crowd.

Although Stevens has been incredibly successful in bringing Ashleigh to life, it hasn’t been without hard work. Having started out in modeling when she was just 13, Stevens moved into acting after completing high school, where she also sang in the women’s choir, competing and winning competitions all over the U.S. But now that she’s gone “Greek,” she’s busy putting in 12-hour days, starting at 5:30 a.m. and “happy to go home at, like, 6.” As a result of the writers' strike earlier this year, Stevens and the rest of the cast have been dealing with a lot of rushed filming. “We had to finish the season that’s airing right now, so the episode that was on the other night was only filmed like a month ago.” The cast of “Greek” may have just wrapped up filming roughly a few weeks ago, but they are already back on set and filming the next season through February.

Fans should be happy to hear that another season is in the works and that it will be an extra long season, as “Greek” was picked up for an additional 10 episodes. But this season isn‘t over yet; the season finale is June 9 and promises to leave fans wanting more. The characters will be heading off to spring break, and Stevens said the trip will “definitely leave a lot of cliffhangers. So a lot of answers will have to come in this next season.”

Not to worry, though: “Greek” will provide viewers with some extra entertainment to hold them over until then. Stevens and “Greek” have paired up with iTunes to do a behind-the-scenes feature to promote the season finale that’s definitely worth checking out. And don’t forget, you can always rush out and grab “Greek--Chapter One” (Buena Vista Home Entertainment, MSRP: $29.99) on DVD to reminisce about the old times.

But don’t think that you can only catch Stevens on “Greek.” The show keeps her plate full, but she’s managing to add onto it. She somehow found time to film a small part in the upcoming film Fired Up! starring former “Las Vegas” star Molly Sims. And while acting is definitely a love of hers, music was always Stevens first passion in life, just one that didn’t come together at first.

“It’s a personal goal of mine to actually get a CD out there and have it be original music that I collaborate with or write on my own,” Stevens stated, adding that she hopes to find some time soon to write a little.

Although she has high hopes and endless possibilities, Stevens still comes off as just an everyday girl who giggles when talking about her favorite show, “Friends,” like hundreds of other girls her age. “I’ve seen every single episode multiple times and I can quote from every single one. I’m like insane,” she joked. But now she uses these actors to learn a little more about her profession, studying how they approach their characters and the choices they make. And she would someday love to work with Matthew Perry, who she gushes is “the love of [her] life.”

Stevens and the rest of the “Greek” cast have managed to create a dramatic and comedic college setting that makes it hard for audiences not to wish they were a part of it. And just to make viewers all a little more jealous, the cast has even managed to create what seems to be their own sorority behind the scenes.

“We’re always dancing in the hair and makeup room and singing,” Stevens said about her TV sisters, who make everyone want to pledge Zeta Beta Zeta. “We just have a great time at work.”

Don’t miss the season finale of “Greek,” Monday, June 9 at 8 p.m. on ABC Family.
