San Diego is better known as being a holdout for republican resistance and a last stop before hitting TJ than it is for its cultivation of indie rock. But the city has produced one of the finest indie bands to emerge on the scene in the last few years: Pinback. On February 21st they will be playing the Avalon in Los Angeles. 

Pinback is the creation of singers/songwriters Zach Smith and Rob Crow. The pair combined in 1998 and, with the aid of some of their musician comrades, quickly rose in favor amongst fans of like-sounding music such as Modest Mouse, Built To Spill, and the Shins. Originally recording in Smith’s bedroom on his computer, this duo has exploded out of those confines and onto the world stage with authority.

Their latest album on the legendary Touch and Go Records label, Autumn of the Seraphs, is an impressive and solid step in their evolution of melodic, intricately woven pop. Their single from Autumn, ‘Good To Sea’, is perhaps the best song of 2007 and catchier than a staph infection at a hippy commune.

While only a two-piece operation at its core consisting of Smith and Crow, the touring version of Pinback adds three additional band members in order to recreate the songs as heard on their albums. The band has been on the road for some time now, so by the time they hit Los Angeles on the 21^st they should be in great form. Be sure to come out and see the band that threatens to give the San Diego indie rock scene a good name.
