 Dog Park Gets Tentative Home

The Culver City Human Services & Park Commission unanimously passed a resolution at its meeting on April 2nd to  recommend that "The Bone Yard" be reserved for a potential site for an off-leash Dog Park. The City Council is not bound by the motion, but it will be put before them at a meeting in the near future. The resolution was passed after a presentation by the Friends of The Culver City Dog Park, a non-profit community group with more than 850 supporters, which is working to bring an off leash dog park to the City.

The Bone Yard is the area in Culver Park just south of the Nature Trail area where Duquesne ends, and where oil wells were recently removed.  Work is currently being done to clear the land, but no plan has as yet been determined for the area.  Reserving the land for the dog park will allow the City and the Friends to work together on planning the park, its funding, rules, and design. The group has been raising money towards the park's funding.

"This is an ideal place for a dog park", said Vicki Daly Redholtz, Chair of the Friends of the Culver City Dog Park. "It is in an already established park and would enhance the services the City offers to the community. We are hopeful that the City Council will support the Commission's recommendation as an important first step towards establishing this long-awaited place for dogs and their owners to meet and enjoy our parks".  Currently, dogs are not allowed in any Culver City Parks on or off leash.

See’s Candies Completes Fencing Project at Culver City High School

Culver City, Calif. --  See’s Candies has recently completed a fencing project at Culver City High School to replace the deteriorating chainlink fence along the campus’ south end, adjacent to Harter Avenue.

“The new fencing will make the campus safer and more secure for our students,” said Superintendent Laura McGaughey. “I want to thank Dave Harvey and See’s Candies for the many thousands of dollars they have donated to Culver City High School and throughout the district to make our schools better.”

Though See’s Candies does not release the dollar amounts of its donations, the company, based on La Cienega Boulevard just outside Culver City, has made an enormous contribution to the district over the last several years.

In the last year alone, See’s has painted the exterior of Culver City HighSchool, purchased the school office’s office supplies for the entire school year, purchased thousands of dollars worth of library books and made a $10,000 cash donation to the school.

In addition, the company has replaced damaged window louvers, purchased two sets of encyclopedias and supported the school’s yearbook.

Harvey added that See’s would continue to do spot repairs on the fencing throughout the campus as necessary and would continue to sell candy bars to all of the district’s schools at cost to increase the margins of fundraising efforts at those schools.

“We are very fortunate to have See’s Candies as a business partner,” McGaughey said.
