Socal Woman
Expecting A Baby: The Latin Style
Sergio Martinez, Socal.com Editor

Are you a Latina? Becoming a mother is a huge undertaking. Becoming a mother in a country other than your own can be close to traumatic.

For Latina women residing in the US, pregnancy time is a highly emotional period and the reasons abound: medical care seems a bit more detached than what we’re used to in our own countries of origin, immigration status affects Latinas access to pregnancy insurance, not to mention language and culture barriers.

If you’re a Latina currently pregnant and living in the US, now you have an alternative in both book and DVD on this subject: Esperando a mi Bebe, a pregnancy guide for Latinas by writer and journalist Lourdes Alcañiz. Both the book and the DVD offer a step by step guide to all Latina women during their pregnancy.

The book and DVD cover topics like: medical insurance, how to obtain help in your city or state regardless of your own legal status, how to locate latino doctors in your area, how to tell apart dangerous from innocuous myths during pregnancy, what herbs and natural remedies are safe and which ones to avoid. Also, a complete month to month guide covering the developments of the baby, what to expect and what to do.

Also included are chapters on Nutrition, Medical Insurance, Giving birth the latin style, etc.

The author, journalist and writer Lourdes Alcañiz, started working on this project when she realized the need after her own pregnancy away from her native Spain. Soon she realized other latina women could also benefit from lots of information that pertains mainly to Latina women:

“Above all, I want to convey two points to each pregnant Latina: there are definitely resources out there meant to help Latinas living in the US through this delicate time of their pregnancies, resources that can help them even in their own language. Also, don’t become isolated while you’re pregnant. This is the time to have close friends and family close to you. This is also your most vulnerable time since pregnant women tend to become very sentimental due to all the hormonal changes taking place inside them” says Alcañiz on a phone interview with Socal.com

Now available through Amazon and major retailers like Wal-Mart, Alcañiz book and DVD are a worthy reference to have handy during your pregnancy.
