Santa Monica Fine Art Studios Annual Open House
Marti Bercaw, Socal.com Writer

Santa Monica Fine Art Studios is a sprawling, exposed ceiling, basic nuts & bolts industrial building where over 38 artists work in their chosen medium. Once a year the artists put down their brushes, chisels, utility knives, etc., organize their spaces and invite the public to an open house. It is almost magical to see the transformation of 1834 Franklin St. from a working warehouse into an exhibition hall.

There are long-term artists you can count on seeing at SMFAS and fresh contributors every year. The work is ever-changing and creates a very positive energy that serves all of the working artists. For the public, the open house offers the rare opportunity to see an eclectic mix of styles, skills, and techniques all under one roof.

Traditionally, curators and owners dictate and influence content in galleries, museums and other studio shows but SMFAS strives for the opposite. With the support of the SMFAS director and professional artist, Tanja Rector, artists are encouraged to find their own muse, discover their own unique voice, their own vision. What results is a kind of rich, democracy of creative expression. From year to year, you cannot predict what the cumulative effect will be but it is, inevitably, very interesting and thought provoking.

During both days of the open house most artists will be available to talk about their work. If they are selling, they will have a price list. A silent auction, held in the studio lobby, has drawn a great deal of interest over the years. Each artist receives an 8" x 8" piece of wood and creates something that represents their work. Bidding starts at $25.00 and has gone over $300.00, in some instances. This year the notion of silent auctions is expanding into individual spaces where some artists will offer selected pieces in private silent auctions.

On Saturday, November 11th, from 6 to 9, there will be a live performance by the band THE MOTION and on Sunday, November 12th, the auction will conclude at 4:30.
