Julia Parker, Socal.com on camera host, and I, as camera, were on the Red Carpet at the TV Guide Emmy After Party 2006. It was a first-time experience for both of us.
We were part of a lineup of media that reached at least a half city-block with the largest media companies stationed in prime spaces at the entrance and the smaller media groups, including dot coms and radio, at the far end. We were sandwiched between hollywood.com and "People Magazine".
By the time celebrities negotiated their way past the cameras, hosts and reporters to the opposite end, many had talked themselves out. The sign of a real trooper is the ability to keep going, fresh as ever, to get that extra PR, set some new spin or put in more face-time. Fortunately for us, there were plenty of star/celebrity guests with the stamina to withstand one more interview before disappearing into the party.
As Red Carpet rookies, we had difficulty getting everyone's name and show straight. Our media neighbor, Nicholas White, a veteran freelancer for "People Magazine", had the good heart and generosity to bring us up to speed a number of times, in fact, he let us share a few interviews with him. The best of these was with Simon Cowell of "American Idol" who heard but preferred not to answer a "People" question thrown at him. Instead of ending the interview with a hasty goodbye, like so many others, Mr. Cowell smiled, pointed out that Nicholas White was "cheeky" but he liked him for it and said he should "carry on". Of course, Simon Cowell didn't answer the question but it made everyone laugh.
The TV Guide Emmy After Party was big, really big. Celebrities streamed in for more than 5 hours. We spoke with many more than could fit in our video.
Bob Corolla - creator of "The Man Show", co-host of the radio show "Loveline" and currently filming "The Hammer", and his wife Lynette Paradise spoke about raising children. Bob likes to blow on them, Lynette exudes infinite patience.
Jeremy London - in pre-production with "Counter Balance", currently filming " I Remember" for Tribeca and appearing in about to released "What I did for Love" for the Hallmark Channel, has time to focus his energy on his upcoming marriage to actress Melissa Cunningham.
Corvin Bleu who plays Chad in Emmy winning "High School Musical" is cutting his first music album for Hollywood Records.
Jason Ritter and Lucy Punch are part of the large cast of the new CBS sitcom "The Class".
Maria Menounos of "Access Hollywood" and "The Today Show" was stunning in a black gown. Her mother thinks Maria is a dog whisperer evidenced by a recent tv interview with Lassie who barked at everything Maria said.
Kevin Sorbo coming off shooting 3 movies back to back, participates in charity golf tournaments when he's not playing sports with his 3 children...well, one of them is only 10 month old. Make that sports with 2 children, one jock pending.
We saw star upon star go on by. (They must have been tired) Allison Janney, Kevin Nealon, Hugh Laurie, Omar Epps, Mariska Hargitay, Joan Rivers and Melissa Rivers (Joan did wave). Paula Abdul stopped to show off her beautiful dress and jewelry. Stockard Channing, Lauren Holly and Pink talked with other people down the line but not us.
On video we grabbed Jerry Bruckheimer of "The Great Race", Cat Deeley and Nigel Lythgoe from "So you Think You Can Dance", Simon Cowell of "American Idol", Cote de Pablo from NCIS, Howie Mandel from Emmy winning "Deal or No Deal" and "Deal or No Deal" models Claudia Jordan, Anya Montekova, Sara Bronson, Kasie Head and Lisa Gleeve. We heard from Malcolm-Jamal Warner of the urban jazz/funk group Miles Long, Virginia Madsen, Carey Hart from "Inked", B.J. Novak from Emmy winning "The Office", Jonathan Silverman and Jennifer Finnigan, Matthew Perry from "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip", Tichina Arnold from "Everybody Hates Chris",
Rex Lee from "Entourage", Richardo Antonio Chavira from "Desperate Housewives", Ben Moody: musician and composer, Joel McHale from "The Soup" and last, but not least, four members of the The Band From TV who provided entertainment at the party along with a performance by Pink and spinning by DJ AM: Bob Guiney, first known from "The Bachelor", James Denton who appears as the infamous plumber on "Desperate Housewives", Greg Grunberg from the new NBC fall drama "Heroes" and Rich Winer CEO of Winer Wealth Management, Inc. This group was joined on stage by Hugh Laurie from "House" and Bonnie Somerville from "Spiderman 2"
Assuming that the TV Guide Emmy After Party 2006 is one in a long line of Red Carpet events that Socal.com will cover in the future, Julia and I have a tip to pass along. Wear sensible shoes. The Red Carpet for an event with a curtain time has a tight time frame to get everyone into their seats. The Red Carpet at an after party is a different animal altogether. Guests make appearances on their own schedule throughout the night.
After 5 1/2 hours on the Red Carpet, celebrities continued to arrive.
How many times in your life do you walk past a chance to talk with Quincy
Jones? But then, maybe his feet were tired, too.
Outside, where the limos idled and the perimeter of special multimedia versa tubes throbbed, there were gift bags for parting guests filled with products from TV Guide and the party sponsors: Olay Definity, Dove Chocolate, Hanes and Orville Redenbacher. It was a very nice final touch to an excellent evening.
'til the next time....
