Cyberstock 2005: Electronica Under The Stars
Jess Stroup, Fateless Flows Collective

Saturday, July 30th marked the 16th annual Cyberstock, an evening of electronic music set on a mountaintop in Malibu, overlooking Corral Canyon. Originally conceived by Pat Murphy of KXLU's Alien Air Music & Dean De Benedictis of Fateless Flows, Cyberstock has provided an evening of progressive electronica in a natural setting since the late 1980's.

This year's event consisted of artists from The Fateless Flows Collective: Reed Rothchild, Violentfingers, Sequenox, Vic Hennegan, and Henry Strange. Video art was provided by Optical Light Pipe.

Reed Rothchild opened the evening at 8:00 PM, with his signature melodic electronic sound. Using a laptop, theremin, and melodica, Reed provided a soundtrack to the sunset, giving the audience a mix fast and slow songs with high emotion content. Blending classical sensibilities and live instruments with technology and odd rhythms, Reed Rothchild's music has a sad, sentimental beauty, and provided the perfect introduction to Cyberstock.

Once the sun was behind the mountains, Violentfingers took the stage, armed with a violin, laptop, and electronic glove used to trigger samples. Her set began with violin -heavy cinematic tracks and then segued into long experimentations with processed violin and glitchy rhythms. This set encompassed what Fateless Flows is all about, pushing the boundaries of technology and electronic music, while fashioning music that is interesting and listener-friendly.

Next up was Sequenox, one of Fateless Flows's main ambient artists, and also a key organizer for this year's Cyberstock. Known for his ambient soundscapes, Sequenox is the perfect artist for this event, providing dreamy keyboard riffs to relax to in this perfect Malibu setting, and then surprising the audience at the end with heavy, crunchy beats and intense cinematic string arrangements.

Vic Hennegan picked up where Sequenox left off, bringing a mix of ambient and dance tracks that give the listener a feeling of joy and well-being. Known throughout LA for his upbeat dance tracks, it is rare for Hennegan to play a downtempo set, but his selections were perfect for the evening, letting the audience relax and be excited about the music at the same time.

Closing out the night was Henry Strange, whose music provided the darker side of Cyberstock with precision drum programming, gritty bass lines, and dark melodies. While being extremely original and experimental, Strange's tracks remain accessible, and by the second song, many were up and dancing frantically to the beat.

With five artists, this year's Cyberstock was by far the most ambitious yet, and was a complete success. The weather and visibility was perfect, and the audience enjoyed a view of Catalina Island to the West, while the lights in the Valley twinkled to the Northeast. With a turnout of close to two-hundred people, Fateless Flows once again provided an electronic music event that is like no other.
