Jazz
SoCal.com Review – ‘Coffee Gallery Backstage’ and ‘Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys’
By JENNIFER FORDYCE

Just north of Pasadena off the 210 Highway in the quiet, church-filled community of Altadena
is a treasure to be found at the Coffee Gallery Backstage. A framed dark-blue t-shirt hangs on the wall that reads “National Sarcasm Society – Like we need your support” which sets the tone for an evening of “broadcast television clean” entertainment that is suitable for all ages, even toddlers!

But don’t let the easy-going façade of café life fool you. People in the know flock here every weekend to experience some of the best musical acts around while a caffeine buzz full of happiness fills their stompin’ feet. There is a wild assortment of hot brewed decadence to choose from including the Double Vision, the Trail Mix Latte and of special note the Owner’s Delight made of espresso, steamed milk, vanilla hazelnut syrup and a touch of cinnamon. And don’t forget to try the fresh baked biscotti.

Who’s the Great Oz behind all the magic you might ask? None other than the much beloved Bob
Stane, owner of the Coffee Gallery Backstage and founder of the infamous Pasadena Ice House. When it comes to entertainment, Bob “insists on enjoying himself every night” and making sure everyone has fun. From the coffee bean warehouse theme painted along the walls of this 48-seat musical showroom to the excellent lighting by Bob Stane himself to the top-notch sound system, you are in for a real treat.

One of the musical act that frequents The Coffee Gallery Backstage is the rip-roarin’ fun of Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys who arrive clad in 1920s fashion from hip hugging dresses to Homburg hats. Just to experience the enthusiastic vocals, finger strompin’ of her ukulele and toe-tappin’ dance of Janet Klein is a sight to be seen, but add to that the well-polished band around her that know what great musicianship is all about and you’ve got a must see act. You can catch Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys at the Coffee Gallery Backstage on November 14, 2008. So save the date! To read more about Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys, go to www.janetklein.com.

So if you’re looking to get your caffeine buzz on and to stomp your feet to top-notch acts, then the Coffee Gallery Backstage is the place for you. Reservations are strongly recommended as seating is limited. “When it is full, it is full” so don’t be late!
