Equator Café

By Angela Gomez

The Equator Café has been the brainchild of Michael Deyermond and Philip Fracassi since Equator’s Books opening in 2005. Realizing that not just any coffee would do, Michael and Philip shopped various coffee vendors before deciding on Blue Bottle Coffee Company owned by James Freeman. Blue Bottle introduced unique blend of coffee specially blended for Equator Café. Their specialized blend combines an assortment of coffee beans from around the globe to create an espresso exclusive to Equator Café.

To enhance the rich and robust flavor of the already perfected Blue Bottle Coffee, Equator Café sends their water out to be tested. This small step of quality assurance guarantees that their lattes and espressos have not only the best flavor but also the perfect texture. Not to be outshined by their coffee, Equator Café offers a variety of herbal teas from Art of Tea to entice the senses and inspire the mind.

Cake Monkey provides delicious cakes and cookies to tantalize the tastebuds. Their ‘Nuff Said and Lil’ Merries cookies were light and airy with dashes of joy added in. They were more than enough to place a permanent smile on my face for the rest of the evening.

A lined journal, a fine tipped gel pen, and a steaming cup of Golden Monkey tea is enough to tempt this author back into the recesses of peacefulness and tranquility. From the moment one steps foot into the Equator Bookstore, a sense of calm envelopes the soul and allows the burden of the world to be left behind.

Away from the Barnes and Nobles and Starbucks that pucker the city streets of Los Angeles, Equator Café will quickly become one of the most treasured places on Abbott-Kinney. Reliving the past through vintage vinyls and time-treasured books, one can’t help but become inspired.
